Staying on the hill makes an early darshan far easier, because vehicles cannot use the ghat road between midnight and 3 am. Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams runs almost all the accommodation at Tirumala, from paid guest houses and cottages to free rooms and dormitories. Here is how it is organised and how TTD’s booking rules work.

Where the rooms are

TTD groups its rooms by area. The main ones are the Sri Padmavathi Guest House area and the Sri Venkateswara Guest House area, and a third group covering the Varahaswami Guest House, Rambagicha, HUDC and Travellers Bungalows cottages. There are also marriage halls and cottages for groups.

For pilgrims on a budget, large choultries offer free rooms for families, and dormitory halls are available. In the free accommodation, electricity and water are provided at no charge.

Free rooms: the Central Reception Office

Free rooms and dormitory places are not booked online. Pilgrims apply in person at the Central Reception Office, near the bus stand in Tirumala. Allotment depends on what is free when you arrive, so on busy weekends expect to wait or to be pointed to a dormitory.

Arrive early in the day if you are counting on a free room, and keep Tirupati as a fallback. Tirupati is 22 km and about 25 minutes by road, and TTD runs large rest houses there as well.

Booking a room online

Paid rooms are booked in advance on the official portal, ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in. Registration on the TTD website is mandatory for booking accommodation. TTD allows one accommodation booking per registered user within 90 days of quota availability, so a family travelling together should plan who books.

A confirmation is emailed after booking. Tirumala.org’s accommodation page lists the room categories but does not publish tariffs or deposit amounts there, so check the current rate for your room on the portal before paying.

The 24 hour rule and overstay rent

Rooms at Tirumala are allotted for 24 hours. TTD charges enhanced rent if you do not vacate on time: 200% of the rent after 48 hours and 400% after 72 hours. These rules were revised with effect from 1 January 2011 to make allotment more transparent and to free rooms for other pilgrims.

The practical effect is that a room on the hill is for a darshan stay, not a base for a long holiday. If you want several days in the area, stay in Tirupati and travel up for your darshan.

Tips for a smoother stay

Book the room first, then the darshan slot, so the reporting time falls inside your 24 hours. Match your darshan to the day’s timings: on Fridays the morning darshan starts at 9 am instead of 7 am, and the temple closes for Suddhi each evening. The homepage planner shows the windows for your date.
